What's Going on with E-Waste. . . .

Every year, right here in Utah, there’s enough old, unwanted or broken electronic items dumped in the landfills to pack the Delta Center to the top – seven times. That’s the first big problem.

The second big problem is Digital Television as we know it, is changing and that means everyone will need a brand new state of the art Television. Here’s a link for more information on the switchover which happens in July 2009 - http://www.dtvanswers.com/

Park City is one of the only places in Utah that provides a drop off location for Electronic Waste, so a big THANK YOU goes out to all of the good conscientious recyclers who already dispose of their e-waste properly.  But what happens to all of that Electronic Waste that does get recycled? Click here (http://www.ban.org/) to get more information on what’s being done to make sure E-waste is taken care of the right way through the Basel Action Network. And click here (http://www.deq.utah.gov/Pollution_Prevention/electronics.htm) to find out what we’re doing in Utah about it.

Currently, there is no legislation in place in Utah that prohibits dumping of Electronic Waste in landfills or that requires manufacturers to be responsible for building safer, recyclable products. This is a link to a website that highlights some of the Electronic Waste policies in place in other states. http://www.serconline.org/ewaste/stateactivity.html.

Utah Senator Scott McCoy (D) wants to do something about our statewide E-waste problems so during this year’s legislative session he will be introducing a bill.
