Elementary Education
Recycle Utah’s environmental educators join classes for activities and interactive discussions to teach essential environmental topics. We teach a wide range all from basic recycling to natural resources, to climate change and alternative energy. We educate over 5,000 elementary students per year and aim to reach all Summit County K-5 schools.
We also offer summer camps through various partners in our community and tours of our Recycling Center.
In the Classroom
Recycle Utah’s environmental educators join classes for activities and interactive discussions to teach essential environmental topics. We educate over 5,000 elementary students per year and aim to reach all Summit County K-5 schools.
Lessons cover the following topics:
- Basic Recycling
- Natural Resources and Why They Matter
- Reduce: Packaging & Consumerism
- Water and Energy Conservation
- Hazardous Materials & Electronic Waste
- Alternative Energy and Climate Change
All curriculum is designed to meet Utah Core Curriculum Standards
Summer Camps
Recycle Utah Environmental Educators are available for Summer Camps.
We are available to teach our fun and hands-on outdoor eco-lessons to groups of ten or more during the summer months. We also love doing tours of our Recycling Center so bring your campers to us too!
Summer Camp Lesson Plans:
- Pollution: Learn about any contamination of air, water or land that affects the balance of the environment.
- Seed Balls: Discuss the benefits of composting, trees and native planting. Create wild flower seed balls with clay, water and egg cartons.
- Water: How does the water cycle work? Talk about water conservation and preservation.
- Recycling: Do a master sort!
- Buy Local: Learn about food miles and where products are made and come from.
TOURS
All field trips get a tour of the center, seeing first-hand the more than 45 items we accept and how we deal with the sheer volume of stuff that we collect every day. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the center and have a chance to ask questions about what happens to your recycling after you drop it off and the resources we are trying to conserve. Tours of the center last about 40 minutes, on average.
Classes are encouraged to do a playground or park clean-up before hand and sort the garbage from the recyclables, then bring the recyclables to sort at the center after your tour.
SORTING
Older groups of kids with more time (1 hr+) can help us sort large bags of aluminum cans. It’s a great hands-on way to learn about contamination and the value of proper sorting. This activity is best for small groups.
We welcome classes, scout troops, and other groups. Call us at (435) 649-9698 to schedule a field trip.
Adult Education
We’re always available to help with your own sustainability initiatives. We see over 400 cars daily at our center and estimate that we answer at least 200 questions per day. Our Center staff is always willing to help.
Please note, we can only accommodate schools in the Wasatch Back and do not do education programs in the Wasatch Front. Click these links if you’re looking for Environmental Education or Recycling Education in the Salt Lake Area. They’re partners of ours and are recommended.
Green Business Program
The Green Business program was initiated in 2016 by Recycle Utah, and has since grown to over 100 members. With new partnerships, we support local businesses on their sustainability initiatives.
The program is free for any Summit County business.
GREEN DRINKS
Green Drinks is an opportunity to meet and mingle with other eco-conscious people, and hear from local leaders about sustainability, environmental, and social advocacy issues.
Join us the second Tuesday of every other month.
Workshops/Panels/Films
We host various workshops throughout the year, from composting to zero waste. We also partner on local panels, discussions or films on environmental issues such as climate change.
