Blue Sky Blocks

The Blue Sky Energy program has been around for over 20 years. Participants in the Blue Sky program can invest their dollars and support a renewable energy future. When signing up for Blue Sky by purchasing ‘blocks’, a business or resident is creating demand for renewables in our region. To date, Blue Sky has supported more than 9.2 million megawatt-hours of renewable energy across the western region. This equates to energy for around 938,000 homes for one year! 

The opt-in Blue Sky program requires no upfront costs or contract; customers choose their level of support. Funds are used to purchase Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from renewable energy resources. Their dollars also go towards funding small and medium-scale community based renewable projects (189+ to date), such as rooftop solar installed at homeless shelters, fire stations, schools and more. Blocks are the equivalent of 100kWh of energy and cost $1.95/block. Another opportunity to support the local transition to renewables is through the Utah Renewable Communities Program, created in 2021 after HB411 (Utah Community Renewable Energy Act) was passed in 2019. This coalition of 18 cities, counties and towns is committed to providing clean energy for Utah, starting as early as 2025. This program differs from Blue Sky in that it drives large-scale renewable energy development, accessible to all Rocky Mountain Power customers. Blue Sky is a certificate-based program that helps support our utility to acquire and retire RECs, while the URC Program will deliver electricity directly to our grid. The goal of the URC Program is to bring enough renewable energy from solar and wind to eventually supply net-100% electricity for Rocky Mountain Power customers, including Park City, Summit County, Francis, Oakley and Coalville. Once the program gains approval from the Utah Public Service Commission and is ready to launch, the current coalition will make choices about what new renewable energy project to bring online. It’s promising that renewables have developed enough in Utah to provide choices for us as consumers. Both programs are critical and we should be grateful that Blue Sky opened their program doors when they did. The more we can do as individuals to support our clean energy future, the better.

The Case for Home Gardening

You may have heard scary reports about large-scale farming and the negative impacts of mass food production. But don’t despair! Here in Park City, we have lots of trust-worthy local farms; but what’s more, we have the fun option to grow our own food! In an era riddled with environmental concerns, home gardening has emerged as a sustainable and rewarding practice.

Home gardening has a smaller carbon footprint than store bought food, which requires energy from transportation and machinery. By growing food, you’ll also reduce your plastic and paper consumption from packaging. Additionally, large food industries take up millions of acres of space for the sprawl of farmland, often depleting the soil of nutrients through overuse. Home grown food typically requires a lot less space, and it can promote soil health and bring in beneficial insects and worms. Growing food at home also means that you can ensure your food is grown the way you want it to be, organically grown without pesticides or chemicals. Your food will be rich in nutrients and fresh.

This all sounds great in theory, but in reality, with Park City’s dry climate and high altitude, it can be difficult to grow food. Here are some practices that can help you maximize efficiency and garden sustainably:

  1. Water Conservation: Save water by utilizing a mulch base and water with old rainwater. You can also use drip irrigation to save water.
  2. Soil Management: Improve soil fertility and water retention by using organic matter, such as compost. Consider container gardening to help with rocky and shallow areas.
  3. Crop Selection: Choose hardy crops that can survive in dry environments. Examples include tomatoes, peppers, kale, carrots, rosemary, and some berries.
  4. Microclimate Consideration: Take advantage of microclimates within your garden space, such as south-facing slopes for warmth and protection from wind, or shaded areas for delicate plants during hot summer months.
  5. Maximize each season: Consider utilizing greenhouses and other insulation/cooling methods to prolong your growing season.

Home-growing food provides benefits to the gardener and the planet. Gardening is a fun and peaceful pastime that can help us connect with nature and learn the gratification of hard work with a tasty result!

The Impact of Lawns on Climate Change

Over 40 million acres of the United States are covered by lawns with two percent of land occupied by turf grass and $30 billion spent on lawn care. Lawns are indicators of socio-economic status in America and the culture surrounding lawns has created a unique but extreme threat to climate change and our carbon footprint. From the water to the fertilizers and equipment needed to maintain a well-kept, Americanized lawn, the toll on the environment is serious.

Most lawn equipment uses gasoline and are two-stroke or four-stroke engines. Thirty percent of the fuel in two-stroke engines don’t combust completely releasing high levels of exhaust emissions. While four-stroke engines are less harmful than two-stroke, one study found that a four-stroke engine running for an hour released emissions equivalent to a vehicle traveling for 500 miles. Five percent of total emissions in the United States are from lawn equipment with an average of 800 million gallons of fuel used annually and 17 million gallons of that spilled.

Interested in having a more environmentally friendly lawn? Here are a couple tips:

  1. Switch to electric lawn equipment! While electric equipment can cost more up front, you will save overtime by not having to maintain fuel. Electric lawn equipment is powerful, compact, and easy to use.
  2. Rather than planting turf grass that creates an artificial environment and stunts biodiversity in the local ecosystem, grow native plants on your lawn. Native grasses, flowers, and ground-cover plants require little maintenance and allow the local ecosystem to thrive.

The Lifecycle of Foam

Packing peanuts, food containers, coffee cups, and packaging material you might know as Styrofoam. In fact, Styrofoam is a Dow company trademarked name for extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) that’s used for insulation purposes. The foam we often encounter when we order large items online or pick up takeout for dinner is expand polystyrene foam (EPS).

Polystyrene is a type of plastic that begins in the manufacturing process as small synthetic beads. The beads are heated and molded to form several types of commonly used plastic, including CD cases, smoke detectors, disposable razors, and other hard plastics. During the heating process, the beads can be expanded and molded to form EPS and XPS foam. EPS and XPS foam are expanded between 40 and 80 percent of the original volume and consist primarily of air. It’s inexpensive to manufacture, simple to transport due to its lightweight nature, and is a semi-durable and reliable product. So, what’s the problem?

EPS and XPS foam are notoriously difficult to recycle due to our municipal recycling infrastructure. In the landfill, it can take around 500 years for it to decompose. When EPS and XPS foam end up in our natural environment, it leaches into our water and soil systems as component cells. The health risks of the component cells in our natural environment are daunting with some experts suspecting them to be carcinogenic.

To help prevent the pollution of EPS and XPS foam in our environment, use alternative products to foam, encourage your local and online businesses to switch to paper products,  and vote for policies and politicians that will create bans of foam in your community.

Fluorocarbon Ski Wax

This past summer, Park City and Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District found Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS) in our local groundwater and wastewater. PFAs are known as “forever chemicals” because of the amount of time it takes them to decompose and are found in various products including nonstick cookware, cleaning products, food wrappers and containers, clothing, and cosmetics. The PFAS polluting the local water systems are likely to be from fluorinated ski waxes also called fluorocarbon waxes used for Nordic skiing, Downhill racing, and recreational skiing.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned PFAS prior to the 2022 Winter Olympics and while local shops haven’t carried fluorocarbon ski waxes for several years, they continue to be sold online and are likely still in many skiers homes and garages. As an environmentally conscious community, the pollution from PFAs to our local water is a reminder that we live, work, and play on our local groundwater aquifer. 

As a skier and a community member, you can help keep PFAs out of our water system by identifying if your ski wax contains is fluorinated and properly disposing of it if it is. Fluorocarbon ski wax will state fluorocarbon, fluoro, high fluoro (HF), or low fluoro (LF) on the packaging. If you own fluorocarbon ski wax, stop using it and bring it to Recycle Utah to be disposed of properly. The next time you purchase ski wax, ensure that it’s fluoro-free and if you ever have any questions, you can always reach out to your local ski shops or Recycle Utah!
